Boardman Park is WILD about the Environment

Since November 2004 Karen McCallum, Recreation Director, has been bringing Boardman Park to local classrooms.  Mrs. McCallum has started a program which teaches students about the wonders of nature that can be found here in Boardman.

Each month has a new nature focus. McCallum goes into the classroom for about 30 to 45mins where she discusses the nature focus and does an activity with the children.  This program is offered to grades kindergarten through 5th.  This program has caught on like wildfire.  The following are the monthly themes, Sept.– Predator/Prey, Oct. - Bats, Nov. – Wild Turkeys, Dec. – Whitetail Deer, Jan. – Owls, Feb. – Bald Eagle, March – Maple Syrup, April – Birds, May – Wildlife in Ohio.

Looking for field trip opportunities for you class during May and June call 330-965-0482 to bring your students out for a nature adventure.  Scheduled field trips will have a 45 minute presentation on Wildlife in Ohio, then an educational game and finish with a 20-30 minute nature hike through the woods.

Karen can also present educational concepts like adaptation, migration, habitats, survival needs, bones/skulls and animal tracking. Boardman Park has a number of taxidermy animals available for classroom use upon request, animals such as a raccoon, gray fox, and red fox. There is no charge for the classroom visits, but there is a limit.  Boardman public and Catholic schools 3 visits per school year, Non-Boardman schools 1 per classroom, per school year.  If you are interested call 330-965-0482 for more info.

The tour takes approximately 45 minutes and is available to civic groups, school classes, church groups and other community organizations.
